I’ve had to look through thousands and thousands of previously posted covers to come up with the three hundred replacement covers featured in this year’s New Covers For Old. And what really stuns me is all of the covers that haven’t changed — obvious typos, amateurish art, and other significant problems that the authors decided, “No, that can be the face of my book forever.”
Other Side—Well, for once an improved cover!
Time for Healing—and then there is this
Adventures—and this
Bayou Fairies—Nice art with (surprise) clumsy typography…but at least you can read it this time
Behind the Gates—if there were only a special prize for godawful typography
Beware the Orchids—so damn close! But (and will there be no end to this?) a halfway decent cover idea botched by awful type
Tishla—nope
Consolation Prize—no prize
Hallow’s Eve—For heaven’s sake, is there a contest to see how many nice images can be fouled up with inept typography?
Snail of Two Cities—oh, please.
Choosing typography is the most difficult step for me. I spend more than half the time it takes me to design a cover comparing different options and almost always end up with the same ones.
Typography is something I cover in a number of posts to my book cover design blog https://bookcoverbasics.tumblr.com/ Maybe there may be some useful tips for you there!
A Snail of Two Cities is lousy as F… But I truly love it.
The original cover to Hallow’s Eve was lousy, but at least it gave some idea what the book was about. Does anyone look at that second cover and say, “Time travel adventure”?
I have to say that the updated cover for Tishla has me less intrigued. The original at least had that hovering U.F.O. on it that led me to ask some questions.
