It’s cargo-cult cover design: Imitating all of the features of a successful cover, but doing each poorly.
Not only is the Papyrus font almost impossible to space correctly (we call that “kerning” in the biz), but it really calls attention to itself when it’s placed on top of the focal point of the art.
The Black Sword Trilogy: The Poacher
A 402-page novel, and that’s the best you can be bothered for a cover illustration? (h/t Nick)
