Terrible cover and writing accompanied by a dozen glowing reviews from paid reviewers and others identified as best-selling authors, yet no reviews posted to Amazon. Nothing suspicious about that. I really, really hate cheats.
On most of the crappy covers here, you can at least identify what the main element being depicted is supposed to be. I have no idea what that is, beyond that it’s got an eye. If it IS supposed to be the head of a vulture, it’s cropped far too close and with the pixelation looks kinda metallic.

You’re clearly missing the layers and nuance.
That said, so am I.
Funny. I’ve joked about covers “hurting my eyes” but this LITERALLY makes my eyes hurt. Weird.

Maybe it is a “pteranoden” from China
My first two guesses were chameleon and goat.
I didn’t know “BLACK” was one of the categories for New York Times bestseller lists.
Punctuation matters, folks.
