Sounds like a bit of a mad-libs description too.

“[Hero’s name] finds a mysterious [artifact]. It could be from the [science fiction artifact] that [action] near the [place] [number] [time unit(s)] ago or it could be the [religious artifact] that [reason for being memorable].”

I quite like the “vintage railway poster”-style duotone though. And of course ITC Benguiat is back in fashion for SF, what with Stranger Things…

I’ll agree that the image would be perfect for an ad for a vintage railway excursion through the Appalachian mountains when the fall foliage is in full color. It is misused to promote this book about the Lance of Longinus or aliens.

What tension! Is it from Jesus or the aliens? There couldn’t possibly be another explanation!

Or it could just be a pointed stick you could poke somebody’s eye out with.

It’s the tree that the spear was made from. Good cover pic for an entirely different genre, bad fonts.
