OK this could have been a good cover… if the designer had not overdone it.
I’m going to do my own “List of five”:
1. Why is there a ferris-wheel in a burning eye? Beats me.
2. I’m sure the eye looked better before it was all messed up.
3. Why add “Prequel to The List of Five” when the title is “The List of Five: a Beginning”? That’s redundant and annoying.
4. The title and subtitle are totally lost over this busy background. I kinda like the title treatment but why squeeze it in a corner like that? And it looks like “A beginning” has been added as an afterthought, in a boring white font with no depth.
5. I like the backgroung texture… but it should have stayed in the background, not covered everything, especially the left part.
How to make a good cover.
1. Exchange the letter ‘s’ for the number ‘5’. It makes your cover more leet. Then, change the font of the 5 so it doesn’t match and isn’t as subtle.
2. Find a bunch of pictures, set them all to overlay. Even though the ferris-wheel picture is not big enough so it leaves a horrid line down the page.
3. Take three serviceable cover ideas that would have worked on their own nicely, a fire eye, a wheel, some notes, and then mash them all together so it is incomprehensible.
4. ????
5. Profit!
1. Put random words in the background and don’t worry if they aren’t “lists” – they are for “atmosphere.”
2. Ferris wheels are spooky of there is a gingerbread man riding in one seat.
3. Using more fonts is impressive.
4. Random coloring will catch the eye. Get it? The eye?
5. Flames. I’ll add flames!

2. Caution: “Prequel to The List of Five” followed by “The List of Five” followed by “A Beginning” may cause an infinite recursion stack overflow for old coots with limited memory.
3. Getting an 8 out of 10 on your homework paper is not really all that great, even if the dog did chew on half of it.
4. Caution: Ferris wheels on covers that cause infinite recursion stack overflows may also cause an infinite loop within the infinite recursion stack overflow.
5. For some reason that orange eye makes me hear Deep Purple (might be due to the stack overflow).
I had a comment, but I can’t do better than the comments above. (And I can’t remember what it was now anyway). ROFLMAO!

There are lots of things I really like about this cover. I love the colour of the iris and how it contrasts with the more-or-less monochrome background. I like the font and layout on ‘Li5t of Five’ and the author’s name (I don’t like the ‘the’ or the font on the other cluttery bits. I like the handwriting in the background. The ferris wheel is a nice idea, but it doesn’t fit into the composition as it is. I think this could have worked with a bit more playing around.
