The Hollow

I wouldn’t have posted it here if it weren’t for that 8-bit silhouette…

Gotta love the pink fleshy things in their comical gravestone hats! Wonderous indeed!

I cannot make heads or tail out of the pink fleshy things. Can’t see enough of them to know. Weird. It’s a shame–the rest of it, the title, byline…not terrible.

This is one of those covers that you scroll down, wondering “not bad, why is it here?” Then “awwww, why did they do that?”

The digital ¿ghost? doesn’t blend in well and could easily have been blurred for better effect. (My first view is about 500×810 pixels on a laptop.)

Less complaint: the blurb should be one font (not two); same for the author.

Making the shadows of the tombstones pinkish to balance the blue in the title on an otherwise monochrome cover is something I would do.

PosRein: The cover looks better at thumbnail and intermediate web ad sizes; title, author and illustration are legible at the sizes most folks browsing for books will see the cover first.

It’s a damn shame. I love what they did with the “Hollow” font, it’s beautiful (I could even forget the pixely spider, how good the font is). Even the byline looks nice (it follows the same style, even if half of it is in another font–but it kinda fits). But the stuff in between… The pixel ghost, the tagline… They could’ve done without it.

I agree, Catie–every time I looked at it, I kept seeing Puzo’s The Godfather–in the original release, it had “The” tucked in, just like that. It’s gorgeous here.

And I do NOT mind the byline, at all. It’s fine.

But the tombstones and the ghost are just so badly OFF. The ghost, we’ve already discussed here; the tombstones and snow, with that pinky hue? It looks like…I don’t know, sticks of pink chalk? With hats? Or something else? Pinky spongy fingers wearing behatted finger puppets?

I don’t know. I agree–it’s a dreadful shame.

It’s not that dreadful or shameful, more like “missed it by that much”.

Except … I looked at it on my phone: yep, on some devices the pink is exaggerated and not a mere tint.

Remembering some folks have B&W only devices, I converted the 24-bit color to 256 shades of greyscale; except for the pixelated “ghost”, this cover looks good in grey.

(Great. Now I ought to check greyscale appearance in addition to legibility at typical web sizes before commenting.)
