I liked the one in the Watermelon, in fact (thought the typography totally wrecked the cover), but this is wasted and probably makes people think he ripped off the cover designer.

Oh, god, I see it NOW!! I kept seeing only that darker smudge inside the boot impression. I didn’t catch or see the rest of the skull…whatever, image or tattoo or ?, outside of the boot print. NOW I see it, but…
I’m stickin’ with what I said. Bad, bad, bad. Needs redoing, especially b/c the Watermelon one is pretty good (and would be really nice if the typography were redone).
Evidently, this Kenneth Mattern guy just isn’t much into clarity.
Is that a watermark, in the middle of that boot print? Or is that meant to be another face, like the watermelon face?

It’s a skull, like in the middle of the watermelon cover (but not the SAME skull).

Really? Because I can see it. On the other hand, I was always good at those “magic eye” things, too.

Oh Lord, it is one of those eye tests. And now that I’ve seen it, I can’t unsee it, and the optometrist is going to tell me I need stronger glasses.
