Why does the background image remind me so much of mid-90s DOS games?
The weird horizontal stripes through it, possibly? Makes it kinda look like someone took a picture of an old, poor-quality video game? (Or, grossly over-enlarged an under-rezzed image, which is the more-likely scenario.)

This, definitely this. A lot of side-scroller and adventure DOS games used low-res images (which of course resulted in aliasing and artifacting) as backdrops/backgrounds in order to allocate and save system resources properly.
I also think that the weird inner glow from the cover’s image reminds me of the shitty Dell CRT monitor I used to own. I’m quite happy with my current curved 144hz LED display!
So, where’s Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, then?
