Rule for lousy book covers: you manage to get good art, you must put words over the best image. (In this case the face and especially the eyes of the most prominent person.)

I’ll grant that the art does not leave much blank or sacrificial space for title and author. But the tagline disappears at thumbnail web ad size and could be sacrificed. This art, this title and this author’s name are striking enough to perk interest.

The typical cover mistake of putting words over faces says “I don’t care”. It is almost as if the text for title, tagline and author were produced by template (title at cover top centered, tagline below title, author at cover bottom right) w/o ref to the image, and the text imposed over the image by a robot, certainly not by a human with eyes.

Another case where I wonder if the author had approval of the final product.

It’s a biblical reference I assume.

Genesis Chapter IV:
9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

So now they’re letting heathens be ordained as bishops as well?

This is just sad. I love the artwork, and with the right design it would have fit well with everything else. Then you had to slap text everywhere and give it a glow that covers even more of it.

Why pay money for decent artwork if you’re going to destroy it like that?

To be fair, they might not have paid…

It’s in the ground, not from the ground. Yeah, I’m nitpicking, but I can’t help it, I’ve worked a year in QA and now when ever I see a bug I have an urge to report it.

The blood is in or on the ground, but it is crying from the ground.

I meant the title, Nathan got it wrong. It’s not “The Blood That Cries From The Ground” but “The Blood That Cries In The Ground”. Sorry for being vague. Not that it matters really, it’s still a lousy book cover either way. And yeah, it’s safe to say we’re all crying. And I’m crying extra because of that Diablo 2 font clone. So, the art says “manga”, the font screams “videogame”, and the novel is some sort of historic fiction? What a strange combination.
