On a more serious note, though, this is the result of what happens when cultural miscommunication occurs in trying to find a cover. This looks great as an anime poster. Toned down, it would be the typical cover for a manga tankoban. But works over there doesn’t always translate well, and what might be an average cover there translates here as busy.
No – manga and anime posters tend to be very busy but still clear, this is just a fuzzy mess. It is trying to copy your typical manga, but failing. For comparison http://www.listal.com/list/naruto-manga-cover-art

Michael Bay’s “The Great Gatsby in the 23rd Century”
Reminds me of a pseudo-psychedelic poster in the 60’s. With anime vomit.

I was thinking that the concept for this cover might have worked pretty well had it been executed better. The themes convey an obvious urban Japan vibe. Then I read the description of it and seems it’s not about Japan at all.
FYI it is meant to be Piccadilly Circus in London. And we were going for a Blade Runner-esque feel. My artist was just more comfortable drawing in the Anime style.
DeviantArt’s anime section: for all your fine cover needs.

Michael Bay’s “The Great Gatsby in the 23rd Century”
Full of Bay-Splosions!
It reminds me of a pseudoanime web comic the early 2000s

What? Are you serious?
Don’t you recognize London?

It’s just too busy. I think it has promise, but there is way too much going on.
Maybe should have adopted a different artist.
