Actually there were some Southern free blacks who fought the North because their state was invaded, plus black slaves who were promised freedom papers if they would join the Confederate army. There are some surprising twists as the Civil War progressedregressed went on.
Sure, and a very large number that fought for the North, for all sorts of reasons (like the Irish did, for a variety of reasons). Still…not exactly commonplace.
Definitely a larger number fought for the blue, mainly to end slavery, some to preserve the Union (which European aristocracy wanted to see fail). The reason a black would fight for the gray was a conundrum or even an enigma.
According to the Amazon page, Book II follows a black reb and a white reb fighting with Stonewall Jackson and is the prequel to Book I. The quality of the cover does not give me much faith in the quality of the historical research necessary to pull off good alternate (Am.)/alternative (Br.) historical fiction. The book may be good or bad, but a lousy book cover does it no good and does not sell it to me.

Because who needs their book title to actually be readable anyway?

Neat trick firing a musket one armed. No wonder he’s missing.
Is that a Black Confederate Soldier, I see? Alternative? No bloody kidding!

Gee, average Civil War musket or rifle only weighed 12 pounds.
Alternative history, not to be confused with alternate history. Alternative history is mainly about 90s rock music.
There’s two
