There is a whole lot of un-lousy in this cover to be honest.
The book is, judging by the ages of the main characters, for 12-14 year olds. I don’t think this bad art for that range. Yes, it isn’t a Harry Potter fantastical image of lovely, but it isn’t awful.
The Title would be better if it wasn’t blue though. Yellow would pop better.
@Waffs: yes, and if there’s any question about it, the “of the” is in–you guessed it–the Harry Potter font. Put your hands over the words on either side, and take a peek–see? Got you some Harry, Ron and Hermione, right there.
I think all I’d have said to the designer is exactly what you’ve said–lighten up that lettering, and make it POP. Yellow, indeed.
Oh, I missed the Harry Potter font.
Well, the type does needs some help here. 🙂

Is it raining or was that dragon drool?
I think the artwork is decent, though there’s not enough contrast between Thrax and the background. It would also be nice if the characters were standing on something besides a foggy sky. And what Waffles said: change the title to a yellow.

I could nitpick the oval moon, the arrowhead that looks like a spearhead, the excessive dragoon drool. But, overall this is good art for indie YA sci-fi/fantasy. (Caveat on my taste: I still like Bakshi’s Wizards.)
It’s that title font (I recall seeing it on other LBCs and it tries at times to become the New Papyrus); I don’t think changing the color would help.
This cover deserves a “Missed it by that much!”–Maxwell Smart tag.

That hangie downie thingie is the color of the inside of its nose but waggles out of its mouth while the white drool hangs vertical from its chin.
That appears to be its red forked tongue sticking out of the red inside of its open lower jaw.

I agree. I was pretty surprised to see this here.

Hope they didn’t kill Fritz.
I’m in the “Whole lotta unlousy” camp too. The fonts, particularly the color, need help. But the art works for me.
Curses! Thraxed again… 🙁
Oh, and is that red, stringy snot coming out of Thrax’s nose?
(I’m assuming Thrax is the dragon-thingie’s name here.)
