Journaling through a rough time is a generally good idea. Publishing your experience as your own cover model/designer… weeeeellll, not so much.

I know, this is a tough one. I mean…it’s not right to be mean about this one. On the other hand, it’s a truly bad cover. But not everyone can afford you, Nate. (Maybe, just this once, you should think about taking this one down. An act of kindness to start off 2014? Just a thought.)–H

Thanks, Nate. 🙂 Really. You know that normally I adore the snark, but it’s true…this one just feels different.

Covers can be commissioned for $100-ish. If the author has no skills, it’s worth that minimal expense. Respect your product.

OK, no snark. Some simple things that would improve this cover:

1) Better font
2) Subtitle on two lines
3) Author’s name down at the bottom in white over the grass (this will also get the type away from the image of the son)
4) Add a shadow under the sitting father so he doesn’t appear to be floating
5) Make sure the images are hi-res

It would’ve been better if someone took a real picture of father figure sitting in the scene rather that photobombing it. He looks like he’s floating above the grass.

And what’s with the blue stuff behind the title? Kind of a blocky shadow? Oy.
I used to frequent a crit website where it seemed like every other person was posting a story about a loved one’s death or some other personal tragedy or tribulation. Many of us have stories to tell where a loss or something else ripped us apart emotionally. Writing about it can be very cathartic, but not all such writing should leave one’s nightstand drawer. I’m off to have a peek inside and see how this one’s writing stacks up. Sadly, this cover should’ve stayed in the drawer.
