They’re just trying to find crabby romance! It’s cute!

It’s supposed to be horror! It would be more effective at conveying the menace of killer crabs without the road curb and person standing BG to give a sense of scale. (Awww how cuute the liddle things are!)

Or if the person was fleeing in panic, not enjoying the scenery.

Screw that, break out a pot of water, some seafood boil, a few pounds of butter….non-nom-nom-CRAB LEGS!!

That, or, yup, they make a body wash for that, if we’re talking infestation. You also gotta throw out your sheets, bedding…bummer.

The person in the background doesn’t seem to mind the crabs.

They are likely experiencing a quiet and very personal horror.

The horror of forced perspective.

Horror, or otherwise a naturally occurring regular phenomenon on Christmas Island. So, maybe replace Horror with Nuisance or Interesting Natural Scene, depending on your point of view?

I was terrified as a child by Roger Corman’s “Attack of the Crab Monsters” and as a jaded and inured adult it would take more than cousins of Mr Krabs from Sponge Bob to frisson my spine.

The pedestrian in the background clearly isn’t grasping the ‘horror of the sea.’

Actually I know this image; i;ts from the annual Crab migration that occurs on Christmas island; they’re quite harmless and it’s more beautiful than horrifying.

I can’t help but think the author first saw the photo and then wrote the book so they can use it as a cover.
