Those are obviously just mittens. The whole thing is rigged to look like someone is actually there. Quite ingenious, makes you wonder what’s going on so you’d read the book (if only this was true, it would make this cover a lot less sucky).
The disconnect between the length of the torso, arms, and legs of “Faith” is disturbing to me. I don’t wanna know what’s going on. I haven’t been this scared since mom and dad took me to the drive in to see the original “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.

The plastic discount-store clock is experiencing an earthquake.
The lamp shade department must have been having a sale, too.

The legs on that “stove” look like they have musculature so maybe it’s not a stove at all but some kind of Lovecraftian, cyclops thing that has mesmerized the woman into mating with it, you know one of Lovecraft’s “don’t mate with that!” sagas.

OMG! Was James McNeill Whistler’s “Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1” the inspiration for this cover?
What woman?
nah, Nathan–her feet are, apparently, on the stove.
My thing is–I don’t get the fact that she (?) has feet, hands, but no neck nor face. Uhhhh…
Oh, it’s a stove?! I wondered why the lady who isn’t there had put a coffee pot on her old-timey TV set.
