Start black and white can work, take the movie Beyond the Black Rainbow for instance, a truly unnerving scene when taken in context. The picture could work to if the aspect were normal and the font changed to something readable, it is all a blur at thumbnail level and that is the first impression a reader gets.
The author’s covers run the gambit of pretty good to mind-boggling awful with some pretty poor font choices.
