According to the descriptions, in these books Jack is a male horse who transitions into a female horse during the course of the story, and Polly is a male frog.
So… points for not conforming to gender name stereotypes and helping with transhorse issues Moonbeak and Jacob!

Since he seems to be a tadpole, I think Polly is supposed to be short for pollywog. But why not call him Tad?
