I think that if the author didn’t mess with the aspect ratio, the hand holding the knife would look like hers.

That blood splatter is supposed to be left on that blade like that from stabbing or hacking? It almost looks like it was painted on a picture of a blade by someone who never saw the aftermath of a knife attack.

Well, I for one would not fault the cover-maker for lacking personal experience on the aftermath of knife attacks. But there are other ways to achieve some level of verisimilitude.
Personally, I like the image – blood splatter issues aside. I’d like it a lot more if it wasn’t squished together with a cheesy Halloween font superimposed on it.
That background hurts my eyes and that red font doesn’t help. With the right aspect ratio, background, and font, this photo could do a much better job.

Plain red font never works. If the cover creator had looked at this in thumbnail, it would have been obvious. Just as obvious, however, is the lack of experience of the cover creator, so maybe my expectations are too high.
Is the hand holding the knife hers? It looks weird, like it might be pasted on. Everything below the knife looks weird. Different color.
That lady is going to pick up something nasty from that blood.

Agreed.

My gut says it almost looks like it was created by someone who never saw the cover of a book.

[borrowed sarcasm]You know what is fresh, original, and hasn’t been done to death?
squished aspect![/borrowed sarcasm]
Open in a paint program, skew the cover ’til the moon looks round (approx 160% hori x 100% vert)
Oh no, It’s catching! 😀

Well, Duh! Of course your expectations are too high, Kris – you’re breathing, aren’t you?
