I don’t know if I want to find out what it really is, but, it kind of looks like polystyrene beads melting in a frying pan?

The picture is just a close-up of a Petri dish with some bacterial colonies growing on agar.

BTW, it’s from Wikipedia, the author just rotated it. I knew I remembered this photo from somewhere – used it in a school science project. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Proteus_mirabilis_01.jpg

Thank you, Geneza! I’m glad to learn that it was less horrible than I thought it might be as an image.

However, medical thrillers can achieve a bit more than this as cover art. I would hope.
