I’m quite puzzled by that little square thing in the middle.
Opening the cover jpeg and zooming in, it appears to me to be the back cover of a book (text over an illustration).
Some crazy matting going on here – it looks like our artist actually cut a whole in his/her horrible art for the space scene.
Maybe it’s a rift in the space-time continuum. Still doesn’t explain that the only thing with edges is a book left on a ?river bank?.
