To be fair, doesn’t Amazon require authors to indicate when their book is part of a series?

They allow it, but it doesn’t have to be on the cover. And there are an awful lot of “Volume 1” books on Amazon for which there are no succeeding volumes. (In this case, there are. The covers for the follow-up volumes are no more impressive.)
