Yeah, real cowboys’ lives were and are actually pretty boring most of the time. The reasons they’re so romanticized in fiction are:
A) Whenever something bad happened, e.g. a thunderclap spooked the cattle into a stampede, or hostile natives attacked them, the survivors of these incidents had some interesting stories to tell; which didn’t make them any more eager to experience any more of this kind of excitement any time soon.
B) Since cowboys’ lives were so boring so much of the rest of the time when nothing bad happened, they had to find ways to entertain themselves; hence any who could learn to play an instrument and/or sing would spend their “down time” (as some people refer to it now) on a cattle drive improvising songs about anything more interesting than their current job.
