Just out of curiosity, if all of these historical romances were actually historically accurate, what percentage of English males would have to be dukes in order to have one for every poor but virtuous maiden?
I had a similar passing thought regarding Westerns vs. the actual twenty-year period during which the West was wild. Place would have been non-stop action and crowded with people thick as a cattle drive.

“Mrs. Rooney, there’s a mysterious gunslinger who just rode into town searching for the outlaw who burned his ranch and killed his family!”
“Another one? That’s the third time this week. Oh, well. Good for business at the saloon, I guess…”
Wow, desperation really drains all the blood out of one’s head.
Nothing says romance like a dude shoving his nose into a woman’s armpit
Well gosh. Here I thought that was the “desperate” part.
