Invitation to a Plague

I’m sure that someone said, “Readers will find the naivete appealing.”

Whoever said that was wrong.

(I’m taking the rest of the week off — Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Americans!)

I really, really hope that “John Antrobus” is about 11 or 12. I would feel bad for making fun of a kid, but I think I would feel worse if someone managed to get as far as the teenage years and still thought it was acceptable to sell this to the public.

“John dies at the end” this is not!

Is this any relation to John Antrobus the longtime UK satirist/scriptwriter? Might be ironically meant cover. Co-writer of The Bed Sitting Room is capable of anything.

Christ, I hope not. That will be taking that “self-publishing cover” thing a step too far.

Amazon is putting it on the same author page as the “real” John Antrobus. Although I wouldn’t be surprised at Amazon getting confused over two people with the same name.

However, it’s published by Bear Manor Media, which is a small but very reputable press. And the writing in the sample is high-quality. I’m inclined to think it really is him, maybe trying an experiment like “will critics look beyond the cover?”
