I mean, you’re right!
I didn’t have any control over the cover art- all the publisher’s choice right here. Which is a huge bummer- I, THE AUTHOR, was judging it by the cover before it could even get into readers’ hands.
One of those things you gotta look at before you sign the contract!
Here’s a thought — I know a small-press-pubbed author who did this:
If budget is the issue, offer to pay for better cover art yourself (or go halvsies, or whatever), with the caveat that the rights to art use go with the publishing contract. In other words, once your contract expires, you can self-publish using the same art if you so choose.

Fire your publisher. Seriously. or pay to get your own cover done and force them to use it. I’m not being mean, here, I’m making serious suggestions.
No, I get that. I’m under contract for the entire series, so my hands are tied there. I’ll see what I can do about the 2nd option.
