Oh, no! They don’t mean Pastime, do they? As in “America’s pastime is baseball,” or something like that? A diversion or the like?

Ya think?

Uh….not so much. I think most readers will do exactly the same thing that I did–look at the tile, wrinkle their forehead, and wonder if they can look forward to “Forward” in the Foreword, ya know?

You know, all I can see, when I view this cover, is something I ran into (ouch!) this past week, in reading an otherwise really fine Holmesian pastiche. Watson is, of course, narrating and he’s relaying how he knows that Holmes is upset:

“…his entire continence had changed so…”

And trust me, that gave me the yips of laughter for a few hours. I did write to the author privately (whom, btw, was charming about it, I must say) and hopefully it will be fixed shortly. (This is a true story.)

But puns and plays on words are one thing. Homonym errors, or worse, deliberate plays on words that appear to be homonym errors…that’s something else altogether.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. 🙂

I had this immediate vision of Holmes sitting there in a puddle….YICK!
