I don’t think this is outright lousy. It makes me think of a 1970s style cover. The painted style is OK. My problem with it is it’s just too abstract; I don’t know what to expect from this book at all. The trick for improving it, if it’s space opera, would be to show more details without making it too busy.
Thinking of this in contrast to two posters for “Serenity”. One’s a group photo that makes no logical sense: giant explosion nobody pays attention to, River in battle pose, other people looking vaguely concerned. The other’s an abstract mess of, like, a spaceship, Mal’s face, and words like “FUGITIVE”.
