That’s a helluva comedown from Michael Whelan’s classic linked set of Lovecraft covers:
Those covers were BEAUTIFUL.
This is clearly the dastardly work of Kov-Suckorth: An Outer god responsible for maddingly bad covers.
“48 books and short stories” … I’m guessing mostly short stories because at a total of 906 pages that comes out at an average of 19 pages per piece.
The Look Inside shows the book does not have a table contents, but the first story is At the Mountains of Madness one of Lovecraft’s three novels. But the book (900 pages) is probably mostly his short stories or novelettes. His really short stories like “Nyarlahotep”, “The Outsider” and “The Cats of Ulthar” are brief and good introductions to his work. AtMoM is not a good starter story.
Since it was decided that most Lovecraft stories are public domain, there have been too many repubs of Lovecraft from downloads of transcripts of varying accuracy.
