It’s funny, when I search the image on Google (I was curious) I got a link to Canva’s music album cover designer, but no image on the link. I also found an actual album cover made from the image: http://beartownescaperoom.com/portfolio/cube/
So it pretty much happened just like you said, they found the artwork (meant to be used as an album cover, no less *insert eyeroll*) and made it crappy.
