Actually it’s the woman. She’s a lot more spooky than the skeletons, there’s something in her eyes. Too bad she’s been violated by being cut out with a very soft eraser and then blurred with edge detection. There should be a law against that.
Hell, why the woman at all? The cover wasn’t horrible–okay, the imagery wasn’t horrible–up to that point. The aquamarine 30’s faux-Deco font, yeah, that’s gotta go, but the rest would have been livable, until they pasted Bondo’ed Butterfly Barbie in there.
I don’t mind the woman. She has a certain weird look that’s looking directly at the reader as if saying “come see the weird shit that’s going on here”. Even the mask intensifies it. It kind of reminds me of the intro to the Ghost Whispered. But the way it’s done is criminal. The butterfly looks ridiculous, the way she’s cut out, half sharp half blurry is horrible, and to top it, she’s blur-smoothed for “artistic impression”. It could’ve worked, if done right.
NOTHING in this cover is spooky, except the fact that someone thought this pasted mess is acceptable.

Skeletons with a line where the top of the skull was sawn open (plus an eyelet on top for hanging from a stand in Anatomy class) have always struck me as decidedly unspooky.
Oh, I don’t know . . . imagine a anatomy class skeleton re-animating to get vengeance on all the students who’ve disrespectfully put stupid hats and sunglasses and shit on it over the years.
That girl in the lower left…why the butterfly, why is half her body glowing while the other half has sharp edges, why…there’s just a lot of “why” to this cover.
The biggest why is why people think they can use Photoshop without knowing how.

Don’t you just hate it when you’re trying to get your photo taken at the skeleton dinner party and a giant butterfly hovers right in front of your face?!
Photobombing butterfly cutout!
Could’ve worked out if done right. It has a very spooky vibe. Instead, it ended up looking ridiculous. Such a shame.
I’m convinced you are being overly generous for some reason.
Perhaps you feel sorry for those skeletons. Well don’t! I have it on good authority that they were very naughty people when they were alive.
They were also very low resolution people!

Honestly, the things that people do….

How does anyone take this seriously with that font?
I expect to see that font in shoe polish on the front windows of a Burger King.

I dunno… I imagine that all the hats and sunglasses over the years havr seeped inside his skull and made him a pretty cool dude.
Now on my “to write” list.
