I think I know what this is. Whoever holds his copyrights probably doesn’t have the rights to the original published artwork. They want to cash in on whatever interest is there, or maintain copyright by use, but do not want to invest substantially in new cover art so they got something cheap. That’s my best guess.
Geez, almost anything would be better than this. Is it the placement of the title that makes the alien look so pornographic?! I was genuinely horrified at first.
Furthermore, putting a $6.99 price tag on the Kindle edition with this abominable cover is also an insult to potential buyers…

And I infer from the Look-Inside, the book is a straight-up scan of the Del-Ray paperback. So maybe not really formatted for e-readers or phones. I hope RAH comes back to punish them tonight!
I just saw this from Arc Manor/Phoenix Pick, the publisher of this re-released volume:
It seems like we screwed up. We were trying a different looking cover for our latest offering of Heinlein’s Red Planet and made it too cutesy and obviously the kids are just too young.
Anyway, based on feedback we will change the cover, but it will take a bit of time, especially with other projects under way.
I think we can congratulate ourselves for making the world a little better.
Unbelievable.
What the hell? What publisher did this? Did Heinlein enter public domain or something?

Oh, this is just so, so wrong!

Obviously the publisher is not wanting any sales.
