Cases like this usually come about when the author regains the rights to their work from the publisher (either they buy them back or the publisher’s rights expire) and wants to put the book out again, but they didn’t secure the rights to the original cover art. So they have to make or commission a new cover image.
The print book had a fairly decent cover, although a bad font. So why give the ebook a lousy cover instead of using the original artwork?
