“Mr Butterfly, I don’t feel so good”
The weird thing is, there is a lot of death imagery with butterflies, and even more with moths. Monarch especially, like on the cover, were once viewed as the returned souls of the dead (in Aztech culture I think). Somehow this managed to avoid all of that.
Great point! Moths figure into “Sleeping Beauties” by Owen and Stephen King. Those aren’t their real names, though 🙂
Now that you brought that up, it does make sense that the author was conveying that via the title – “A Message from Jessie” – but the cover certainly doesn’t convey that.
I read the sample – it’s a powerful story and deserves a much better cover.
Butterflies would be more appropriate on Vampire novels, if you know anything about the wee buggers. Pretty, yes–but they would be perfect for your basic 1950’s Japanese Mutant monster movies, given their actual propensities.
I’m now imagining the Peanuts duo singing, “Butterfly-ya! Butterfly!”
I hope they get a better cover – I’d offer to do it if I had any cover design talent. But I don’t, so I wouldn’t be doing them any favors!
A girl and her butterfly fade in and out of reality.
