Shrimp of the House: Claymore Jane

Shrimp of the House: Claymore Jane

Here’s the kicker: IT’S AN ENTIRE PSEUDOHUMAN GRAPHIC NOVEL.

Well, it’s truth in advertising, then; and I gotta concede it’s better than the last pseudohuman “graphic novel” we had on here. (It’s more readable, for one thing: you don’t have to crane your neck or turn your monitor on one side to look in the book.) From what I saw of the inside, it looks rather like a cheesy TV drama, but… well, somebody watches those shows.

Something you might notice about the sales page: the author actually goes out of his way to mention that while his graphic novels may have some adult situations in them, they’re not erotica. As I said back in the comments section for Blood of Kings, that’s where pseudohuman comics (and animation) pretty much got started: with pornography, and usually the kind involving acts and participants that would be illegal to portray in a live-action production. If cheesy dramas like this are all the authors and artists have to offer so far, it’s probably going to be a while before rendered graphic novels leave the pornography ghetto and go mainstream.

That’s not really true… psuedohumans have been in broad use for a long time – you wouldn’t tend to know it because in the best use of them, they don’t look like rendered 3d at all, thanks either to post work or non photo realistic rendering (there are toon-line rendering options, as well as shaders to simulate natural media, such as ink and pencil). As for graphic novels, here’s a good example:

http://www.experienceanomaly.com/anomaly-productions/

I know the novels Anomaly,Faster Than Light, and Shifter all make extensive use of Poser.

And there’s the rub – without being in the know, folk are unlikely to recognize the good stuff as being rendered, just the bad stuff, so they will always tend think of rendered as bad.

Claymore Jane? Wasn’t she the gal who wore the tee-shirt that read “FRONT TOWARD ENEMY”?

The gal on the cover is showing horrible muzzle awareness and trigger discipline; Jeff Cooper would be appalled.

Eye + brain activity (or lack thereof):

Claymore –> claymation –> Jane –> Sluggo –> is Mr. Hands! –> OH NOOOO!
