Amazon blurb describes it as set in “an alternative history of World War II” which somehow allows Nazi Germany and Soviet Union to clash over France. France (Western Europe), Germany (Central), Soviet Union (Eastern). Alternate geography of Europe? Good alt hist asks the reader “What if?” This cover makes me ask “What the diddly?”

I am trying to get my mind around how it would be possible for the Soviet Union to even BE in France unless they’d already steamrollered their way through Germany. Did they go around the other way, across two oceans and America?

They snuck very quietly across the Baltic and through the British channel, or went around the north of Scotland, and between Wales and Ireland, while pretending to be Norwegians.

…or, alternatively, Spain joined the Soviet Union.

Spain under Franco was Fascist but sat out the war (the Spanish left aligned with the Soviets lost the 1930s Spanish Civil War) but, then, it is an alternate history story, isn’t it?

This could have been an alternate timeline with the Communist-dominated Republicans having defeated Franco. Although, judging by the free preview, the “alternate” part in this book lies elsewhere.

The Soviets were allied with the West against the common enemy Nazi Germany. The Soviets would not have to sneak if they wanted to get Soviet T34 tanks to the Western Front. But their resources were tied up on the Eastern Front so the flow of Allied supplies was West to East.

I get the impression from the blurb that in this alternate time-line France is neutral and Britain goes to war alone. I’m sorry, that’s just not happening. Not the neutrality part but Britain going in alone against Germany (this is Chamberlain we’re talking about here). In this situation I see the German generals getting their way and not starting a war against any of the major European powers until 1944/45.

Given the color I think that the soldier is an absolutely awful attempt at a French poilus rather than merely a bad attempt at a British tommy

i’m also worried about the fact that, judging from the length and position of her legs, she’s been cut in half.

Is anyone else getting that the soldier is a woman? That looks like a woman’s back and shoulders and posture to me.
