Didn’t this author ever see that 80s made for TV movie about people being vaporized by a nuclear blast? About the same distance away. “Well son, say goodbye to your gonads”.
Unless the man and boy are from an alternate dimension and are protected by a force field of some kind. Are they nuclear holocaust tourists? Is this an educational field trip?

One of the test firings of the M65 “Atomic Annie” cannon showed the mushroom cloud at range 7 miles but all personnel were sheltered against radiation and blast not standing in the open.

Apparently, the Horsemen have fallen upon hard times, and have been forced to don a matching set of JC Penney bathrobes.
