Why does the female have what looks to be a dog leash at her waist? Or maybe the guy has her on a leash?

My opinion but people need to stop trying to rewrite the classics like this.

Looks more like Darcy’s Last Prom. At least she had a date. I’m thinking she ditches him at the punch bowl in chapter five.
