I had to explain to my straight-A children that that was a tree. They’re highly imaginative and creative but refused to buy the “it’s a tree” one little bit.
Those two “kids” look like comic characters stolen from the 1940s. I’m thinking whoever designed this cover (the author or her 9-year-old son) “borrowed” those from something (and can expect to be sued by some news syndicate or other).
I immediately flashed on all those weird cartoons (from the 40s and 50s, I think) of toys and items on store shelves or in books coming to life and screwing around when no humans are around.
Always seemed like a creepy idea to me. More because they looked like this – unreal and inhuman.
Not see animals, apparently.

It’s a HUGE red flag when a book is only on Smashwords and not Amazon. Like this mess.
