My first thought was laptop, but perhaps that is the effect of working with IT in the past and staring at a laptop right now. It is only after others commented on it I started to look closer. Part of an accordion?
She does look like the monster in REC. With lipstick. Perhaps it is her, she has realised that with a bit of makeup and some social skills she does not have to spend her life lurking in an attic.
I thought it was either a scanner or a fancy three-hole paper punch. Perhaps it is like a Rorschach test. You see whatever you want to see caressed on the cover of a book.
Obviously going for the Milton Waddams demographic.

I expanded the cover horizontal ’til the girl’s chin and fingers appeared normal proportions, and the thing began to look like the bottom of a guitar with a wedge shaped body.

So needless to say… This ‘object’ doesn’t work on a cover as no one here is certain what it actually is.

Normally I am good at this… but I have no idea.
My first thought was guitar, now I am thinking whatever it is has been clumsily erased out after her arm!
It is a guitar – which she’s holding upside-down. Must be her first lesson…
I think it *might* be a zither.
It sort of looks like an overhead projector with strings.
I think it looks like a DVR they’ve slapped a bunch of polished rocks on and added hinges.
It might also be the handles of a combination electric post hole digger and face moisturizer.

I had the exact same reaction. Is it some kind of folder/binder? With studs on?
