Lots of bright lights, no “shadow.” Just sayin.

Parts of the battleship (or space station or whatever) on the right seem to be in shadow, which is consistent with the light that seems to be illuminating the death star (or whatever) on the left. Note the dark area under the ‘s’ in “Cincinnatus”, with the patch of light immediately under it, then more shadow. Also note the turret, the solar panels[?] between the dark gray craft, and the large engine[?].

Technically speaking, I have no real problem with this drawing. It would probably be great as part of a huge poster, or a gatefold album cover. But as a book cover, it’s just too much random crap in too small an area.

Are those laser sounds, or do you think it really stinks?

I have a funny feeling that this might be lifted off from some non-free source. Is there a tag for “potential copyright infringement” or “copyright what’s that”?

While I haven’t yet read any of his books (although there is at least one sitting in my Kindle), I know that Christopher Nuttall is a fairly well-established and respected indie author. Of course, that doesn’t mean that he *couldn’t* do something stupid like steal a cover image, but it does make it much less likely. I’ll also note that the Look Inside! sample contains a credit for the cover art. Again, this doesn’t definitively prove it isn’t stolen art, but I’d say it probably isn’t.

I like having an insider here to snoop for us and provide juicy details! It makes this site so much… juicer!

I wouldn’t call myself an “insider”. I simply know about Christopher Nuttall because he writes in genres that I’m interested in. I don’t know him personally.

Oh good, I mean last time there was a decent space-fighty cover pixelated to hell and back, it was definitely stolen. So… once burned, twice shy etc.
