The helmet looks normal to me. That’s not what ruins this cover.
One thing that does ruin this cover (besides the author photo) is that the texture applied to the entirety of photo gives the soldier’s skin the same look as her gun and the background wall(?) she’s crouched in front of.
I think the picture of the soldier is fine. I don’t think she is actually wearing lipstick (her lips probably look that way in contrast to the green on her face) and some people of certain racial descent do have quite dark skin around their eyes. What makes it suck is the texture overlaid on it and the font and all the other crap stuck around it.

I think this author is a Real Estate agent. It would explain their picture on the cover.
