Drum Dance

Know what makes it for me? That little Union Jack bumper sticker.

Is that orange blob in the top right a face?? A very squished face with a rather impressive mustache?
(Curious fact: the Union Flag was still Canada’s official flag at the time this story was set. Even so, it still seems a bit weird to use it on a canoe; he should probably have gone with a Red Ensign.)

When you don’t have a Winnebago to display your collection of bumper stickers, your canoe has to do.

Is the photo so blurry because 1) it is stolen, or 2) it is a lousy photocopy of some book art?

The cover looks better at internet ad or thumbnail size.

Land of the Midnight Sun… native watercraft were kayak (hunter boat) and umiak (family boat) and were made of hide correct for the Arctic. Canoe? No you shouldn’t.

So I checked the book blurb. “Sir John Franklin and his crew” insisted on going to sea in birchbark canoes (hence the Union Jack on the prow) against wiser advice leading to tragedy.

Hmmm. As a teen I did like Jack London and the Yukon adventure stories used to pad out C.S. Landis’ “Hunting with the .22”.
