Sorry, Nathan, but I’m going to have to flag you on this one. I thought this was about lousy book covers, not making insensitive remarks about the author, content, and his struggles. Not good.
The cover isn’t doing its job if the cover says, “This is all about me!” It should instead tell the reader why they will find the book interesting. I still consider it a presentation failure, not a content failure.
I’m fine with your conclusion that the cover isn’t doing the job. I agree it’s not done well. It’s just that your comment comes off as attacking the content, not the cover.
I’ll point out that the cover design and title/subtitle are lousy because, in part, I can’t tell if this is a serious memoir about dealing with the subject, or a more lighthearted “laughter is the best medicine, look at my crazy life!” kind of memoir. One might attract a much different audience than the other…

The idea behind the book would have been better conveyed by showing the person’s face, be it laughter for a lighthearted book or pained expression for a serious look.

If half of my head was missing, I would be panicking as well.
Becoming an author probably won’t help with those panic attacks…
