“He never had the chance to tell her how much he loved her before the gigantic explosion at Port Chicago took her life”

Is it possible that the person who make this cover didn’t know that that was a picture of a nuclear explosion rather than just a generic explosion?

And now I know how it ends. No need to read it.

The actual Port Chicago explosion was compared to a nuclear explosion at the time, so the photo may or may not be accurate. Still a poor choice for the cover though, and there is very little chance of a blonde white girl being near where the explosion took place.

Unless this is an alternate-universe historical romance.

The cargo ship “E.A.Bryan” contained 4,600 tons of various munitions and 5,292 barrels of fuel oil. The explosion was estimated as the equivalent of a 2 Kiloton tactical nuke and was studied as part of the Manhattan Project. Essentially “E.A.Bryan” and 320 men disappeared. The fireball was estimated at 3 miles in diameter. Yes, the fireball image is appropriate.

But how many people know about (or will search for) Port Chicago Disaster? A lot of bad covers have unnecessary blurbs, but maybe a good blurb would have helped this one.

I suspect that nobody would be around the now highly radioactive area to notice the ghost for many, many decades.

Either that or they’re incredibly fireproof. “Stand back everybody! I’ll smother the explosion with my boobs!”

“Hey lady, your boobs are on fire! No, no, I don’t mean you’re hot, your boobs are literally on fire!”
